I totally agree with the post. I've been using this same nick name (which I carefully chose for myself, actually) since the turn of the century. (Sounds like a long time put that way, doesn't it?) People pull my sleeve sometimes on the streets asking if I'm "the Sebastyne", and that is hardly anonymous anymore. Even my husband calls me Sebbie, so the online nickname that doesn't mean anything to the readers of this site, mean a lot more to the general public in Finland than my real name will ever mean. I've never been big on anonymity to be honest, but the reasons for using a nick name are vast. You can be a lot more honest in your writing when you don't have to protect the reputation of yourself and your family, that can be linked right back to them if you're using your last name. So if you REALLY want to know what people think, you let them introduce themselves with what ever name they want to use.

Hi Michael,
I hope this isn't too off topic, but you did bring it up. I know your name is Michael, but I'm hesitant to call you that in the forum, because I know you have the ProjectPHP handle. There are a couple of other forum members (myself included) who have handles like this, and though I've learned their actual names over time, I always pause when I go to comment on one of their threads because I don't wish to shout out their actual name if they don't want it used.

This is my chance to ask you this. Would you rather I say Michael or ProjectPHP in the forum? I've been wondering that for some months, now.

This is an interesting topic you've brought up!
Kind Regards,
Miriam
