Following my previous post, I’m finally in the process of moving eKstreme.com to a new host and a new CMS. The down side is a ton of manual work to transfer the page via copy/paste into the new CMS. This is making me read a lot of pages I forgot about. Stale content from years ago. The odd broken link here and there (thankfully, not many!).
The move is also making me reconsider the site’s structure, the databases it needs to run, all the intricate dependancies, etc. That’s a huge aspect of any website’s backend, and I’m happy with it as it stands now. The new CMS will enable a revamp of the core of the backend in the future if needed.
So here are some questions for you: what’s in your site’s attic? What pages have you forgotten about? Can you revamp them and make them competitive in the SERPs again?
So come on, let’s get updating, folks. Join me in my misery mission to rid our sites of old crusty burnt moldy text!

I’ve got my share of long-lost pages; but I do try and be pretty consistent in at least glancing through the folders every once in a while, just looking to update something.
Constant vigilance!

Heh, I wrote nearly the exact same thing nearly a year ago. (http://www.seo-scoop.com/2006/09/01/whats-in-your-attic/)
It must be that moving (be it in the real world or the virtual world) gets us in the mindset of looking at old stuff and wondering what can be made of it. So, Pierre, is the move over and done with by now? Did it go well? I hate moving sites, especially if databases are involved, since the version of the db server usually matters. In any case, hope the move went well, and you found some new uses for those old, crusty pages.

Wow, that’s weird! You’re right in that moving makes people find old stuff and stop to contemplate it.
Move not done yet, but very sure it will go smoothly. It’s just a tedious chore.
Pierre
