The Semantic Web and Search Engines

A thread on Semantic HTML has inspired a number of interesting questions, and spawned some interesting directions.

The thread was kicked off by Yannis, who asks

The word semantic has many different meanings for different people. Have you got your own definition and meaning? Have you got your own rules about semantics that you follow?

A great question, it’s followed by some excellent posts, which ask a number of other questions.

What is semantically rich HTML? How well does it work with SEO, with standards?

Should a logo be placed within a <h1> element on each page of your site?

Google Phone Usability Research

With a Cre8asite Usabilty forum, and a forum that focuses upon how Web pages look on different types of browsers, including mobile devices (I’m a big fan of both forums), I was excited when I came across a new paper from Google which looks at usabilty testing of mobile devices.

I’ve recently written about a patent application from Google that discusses software that could enable people to search Google without using a browser, and Aaron, at soloseo, followed up with some of his experiences searching on a phone. I’m curious if others are enjoying the experience.

New Google Paper on Near Duplicate Documents

One of the most talked about and disputed topics in search engine optimization is how search engines handle duplicate content. It’s exciting when we find new research from a Google or Yahoo that discusses the topic.

If you have a Web page, and someone scrapes your site, and copies your page, but with ads upon it, how does a search engine find out? Does the search engine even care? If you write an article, and syndicate it, with links back to your web page, will there be problems?

Page Strength Tool from SEOmoz

Over at SEOmoz, Rand Fishkin and Matt Inman have come up with a interesting new way to measure the visibility of a page on the web, and its ability to rank well in search engines.

Their Page Strength SEO Tool measures and considers a number of different metrics to come up with a value for a specific page. I tried it for Cre8asite Forums, and received the following result:

Page Strength SEO Tool - SEOmoz.org

It collects a nice set of information about a page. If you haven’t seen it, it’s definitely worth a look.

Some Good News, if you are in the UK

In a totally unsolicitated, but shameless plug, one of the Cre8asite Forums members who regularly posts about design within the forums, and selflessly provides some of his thoughts on other people’s designs is holding a one day seminar on design, titled Web Design from Scratch LIVE.

The seminar is on 07 November 2005 in Chesterfield, England, and the price for the single day event sounds like a bargain at £ 295. It is intended for:

Designers

Developers

Managers

Site owners

And others who work on the web.
