In an end of the year slap in the face to web site owners and marketers, Google shows it is now a true kissing cousin to Microsoft.

I’m quite convinced the Google “response” was misdirection. Oh hell. Its a lie.

There is some real disdain being felt right now for the screwy way in which Google has responded to questions about why they made this change. Google has a way of compounding existent frustrations caused by poor communication by then giving conflicting responses to issues like these.

the google reaction was weak. Something is going on. They aren’t being straight.

The wierd results for 7pac/10pacs for <city name>advertising agencies (only the plurals) have been around for a while. They were always of the ilk for the current list for Baltimore.

Then this past late Spring/Summer they started getting better with more logical businesses for various searches in various cities. Not perfect…just better.

Then Google made this change where they impacted the weight of the algo that generates onemaps or 7pacs. Far more 7pacs were appropriately showing than before.

Then the advertising agencies data turned wierd again. Then Google decided to kick SEO’s and web designers out of 7pacs.</city>

It’s amazing how one small bit of code can create such debate.

Major Search Engines Agree On New Canonical Tag discusses first the news about this new tag and then rolls right into a rollicking debate about whether or not anyone should waste their time with it.

Here are some comments:

What I think is interesting is that all the SE’s came together on this. I’m hope to migrate 80% of my traffic away from Search engines by the end of the year, and I hope others follow suit. — Glyn

This “tag” (link element) is not really meant for cross-domain usage. It’s not a way to claim ownership of content. It’s just meant for all those situations where you run into duplicate URLs within your own site and it’s hard to get them sorted with redirects.

Here are some examples where this could be used:
- Web-shops (mutliple URLs depending on how you got to a page)
- Sites that work with Session-IDs within the URL
- Ad-tracking URLs (eg using AdWords + Analytics)
- Affiliate tracking URLs
- News sites with multiple URLs per article
- Forums with multiple URLs per thread/page (eg “&highlight=”, etc) — John Mu, who works for Google

What I find most interesting – and quite amusing – is that once again the search engines are admitting failure to properly value links. — iamlost

There are many cases where the use of the Canonical Link tag would be slapping a band-aid on a broken leg, but there are also cases where using a 301 would be like applying a splint and plaster-cast to a graze. — Ammon Johns

I wonder if they’ll come out with a http Headers version to allow you to canonicalize PDFs, XML / RSS / mRSS feeds as well. — phaithful

Whether you are confused, frustrated or thrilled with this fix, the discussion is educational. Enjoy!

Cre8asiteforums celebrates its 6th year anniversary this month with a month long series of interviews, games, reunions, and the launch of new forums. Kim Krause Berg is interviewing Cre8tive Community members, industry folks and forums Moderators.

Are We 6 or 10?

Technically, if you’re Kim Krause Berg, we’re 10 years old. This is how long I’ve been at the wheel. Cre8asiteforums began as the Cre8pc Website Promotion Club, back in 1998, in Egroups. Egroups was acquired by Yahoo! and changed into Yahoo! Clubs.

Cre8asiteforums’ history is humble. Bill Slawski, Ammon Johns and Jill Whalen were there to help launch the “new and improved” forums in August 2002. Each of them left their mark and contributed to the long term success of the forums, with Bill Slawski hanging in there for nearly the entire 10 years. Site Admin, Adrian Lee, has been with Kim since the old Cre8pc club days.

As the world turns and the industries we cover ebb and flow, Cre8asiteforums is always there with a fun loving, vibrant, smart community ready to help, teach, and network with.

Stay tuned…we have interesting interviews coming up here in the blog.

Follow the festivities in the Monthly 6th Anniversary Party! thread.

Thank you for your friendship and support!

As founder and administrator for Cre8asiteforums, I announced two days ago to our Members that the moderating and site administration staff were taking time off, away from their daily duties. It seemed appropriate that after over 5 years of dedication, it was time to set aside some time for a little break.

As stated in my post, Cre8asiteforums Staff Taking Time Off,

Each of us is more than our work. Our passions are as varied and unique as ourselves. The moderators and I are growing in our awareness for how our work affects our world. Our business practices, for example, reflect on our respective industries. We understand that our best practices beliefs apply to how we interact with our world and everyone we meet.

For the next day or so, we’re doing something we’ve never done in the over 5 years of being online as Cre8asiteforums.

Each of us is taking time to contemplate, meditate or pray for healing, love, justice and kindness. Staff members have chosen to take time off or share some thoughts here.

We have much on our minds.

Peace. Global warming. Are there positive was to conquer poverty? How to stop child slavery, genocide, mass starvation? There are issues where we live, such as killing off an animal species. We seek good news to share that will uplift our hearts and offer hope.

It’s our planet and we want to turn it upside down, shake out the nonsense and bring back the humans.

Soon after this announcement, we came to learn that certain changes began to occur. Several members have inquired with concern, as evidenced in Erm… Interesting Changes?.

Truth be told, I fear my personal tirade against Spammers may have caused the forums to come under serious scrutiny and ruffled flutter by those who wish us harm.

We will remain alert and keep you all informed as we learn more about what’s happening.

In keeping with our passion for “Building Better Web Sites Together, For A Better World”, Cre8asiteforums has launched its second new forum today. This one is called Cre8tive Tomorrow and is sure to be “geek heaven”.

Our moderator, Pierre Far, leads the way on this journey. He writes,

Only a few short years ago, very few people have heard of AJAX and the promise it brought with it. In the time between its inception and wide-spread adoption, we saw many great failures and many great examples of how to implement AJAX. It seems that the trajectory AJAX followed was filled with more trials and errors than simple successes.

And now, we seem to be on the cusp of another major disruption in how we code and interact with websites. To take a few examples, we have the all too common APIs that developers can tap into to get hold of interesting data. We have new services gaining prominence like the Amazon Web Services (AWS) collection like S3 and EC2. These days, building scalable and highly-available websites is more about simply choosing to do so than anything else.

On top of this, we have a new set of technologies now, beyond traditional Javascript and HTML, like Microsoft’s Silverlight and Adobe’s FLEX. Silverlight 1.0 was released a few months ago and version 2 is on the way with a massively increased functionality. Both promise a much richer and interactive web experience.

Not to mention Google’s Android, Gears, OpenSocial, and of course, the hot topic of 2007: Facebook apps.

We look to the future and invite you join us.
