Some great information thank you. I still find it surprising that so many sites still use poorly poorly written html and many sites don't seem to understand the significance of using keywords in link anchor text.

A timely reminder/education for many WP bloggers and those on other platforms - there are many things you can do to make things more secure including protecting your admin areas through IP restrictions and password protection of admin directories.

Much of what I have learned about this was through other blogs and forums dealing with PHP security - the backup advice is still one of the most important though - being lazy can be very costly.

Not sure if it's the final frontier but it is the present frontier. I think it will definitely separate the men from the boys as it is time consuming and thought provoking to create blog posts, read and comment on others, and make friend along the way. Not everyone is willing to spend the time to make a difference.

Barry, this is so true on many different levels. The social media explosion know as web 2.0 is changing the way we (Realtors) do business. There are more and more networking and bookmarking sites popping up every day. The latest things that we are experiencing are the customizable wordpress themes that are essentially static sites built around a hub (blog) to give the consumer/reader the total package and prevent them from leaving the site. Nice article

Bob, I assume you mean allowing others to track-back to your post. In effect this is a back-link to use Google's term (Yahoo! calls it an inlink). Such links provided they're from authoritative websites are certainly useful in gaining higher Google rankings.

Barry, Great article! Lots of good information. Its amazing how many times I still see "Home Page" as the title for a page. Many people are still using the same meta description by default on all their pages and unfortunatley, like greywolf said, there are still some CMSs that do not allow these fields to be edited or optimized. This is a good start and explanation for some on-site SEO that is easy to understand even for the most novice of bloggers/site creators.

I always skim through any PHP code I come by before i place them on my webservers, for those who don't have any programming background then it is always good to keep in touch with security websites, and subscribe to the PHP authors mailing lists/RSS feeds for newer versions.

Linking strategy and SEO go hand in hand. It seems to me that one of the more important (but completely unfair) rating methods is based on the age of the web site. Unfair because it would indicate that new sites have little chance of good ratings.

The other issue is that you get rated on the quality of links to your site but surely this is susceptible to a newer, more refined version of 'Google Bombing' where you trash a serious competitiors site by creating one of those hated 10,000 page junk sites linking back to them.

Can you improve your rankings by getting a competitor delisted? I believe so. Would it be worth it? I really can't answer that, I suspect not. Regards.

When I first started in Real Estate I had a WordPress blog that I used quite frequently. At the time I was completely ignorant to most, if not all, SEO. Well, it got hacked. After about 6 months I joined a forum and quickly learned from some of the other members that there was all kind of hidden text and keyword stuffing in my cached snapshot of just the text on my blog. I had been hacked and was essentailly advertising for all kinds of lovely stuff like "Pe_n_s Enlargement" and other misc. things. It took a little while to clean up. I am just glad that it happened to me in the very early stages of my social media campaign. Now I know what to look for and tend to be in defense mode most of the time. I guess you have to be....

That's really tough, Thomas. Backing up is so easy with the right plugin. You can back up after every post or once a week and it takes very little time. I hope you can somehow get back what you lost, although you then have some work to do however convenient your backup is. It's tragic that such things happen.
