The Flawed Arguments Against PageRank

Filed under Search Engines & Directories by Michael on October 29, 2007

It was inevitable that, with another PageRank obsessive week in SEO, people would start calling to ditch PageRank, lose the PageRank display on the toolbar etc etc. I believe that all such arguments are flawed, and for a variety of reasons, that I’ll keep to two.

Firstly, there is the problem of measurement. What, exactly, is the problem that removing PageRank, form the toolbar or the algo, suppossed to solve? And what metrics do we use to measure this? Comscore data shows that, despite having over 50% of search, Google increased their market share in August, 2007. The most important metric (market share) seems to favour Google by a wide margin, so i can;t really see that any of this really hurting their bottom line.

PageRank Smackdown 2007

Normally, I hate wading in on topics that have been done to death, but on this occasion I feel the need to.

For those that don’t know, Google reduced the PageRank for a number sites, in many cases between two and three the toolbar scores/ranks/numbers. This has caused many people to write a heck of a lot of posts, and make me eternally thankful that Blogs use bits and bytes, not paper (I reckon an Amazon worth of trees would have been cut down otherwise).

Are Search Engine Marketing Bloggers Held to a Higher Standard?

When Rand Fishkin wrote What Makes a Good Web Directory, and Why Google Penalized Dozens of Bad Ones in his own blog, he was writing to his readers with his own voice, his own style and, as do all of us who write in blogs, at his own risk.

It became a trigger for Smackdown’s Michael VanDeMar, who wrote in his blog, Why SEOmoz Needs A “For Entertainment Purposes Only” Disclaimer.

A thought provoking debate in Cre8asiteforums looks at what has been happening as a result of the clash, in Professional Blogging…must Back Up With Facts? and what this means. We have a problem and it’s been repeated over and over for years and seeps into new venues, like Sphinn.

Avoiding Telemarketers

There was a time, when I first starting working from home, that I could go all day without speaking to anyone. I used top, at that time, really enjoyed the distraction telemarketers provided, and I had a lot of fun with them (see below).

Nowadays, however, that thrill has long since passed. Luckily, I finally worked out, after about 150 telemarketing calls, how their software works.

Everybody Wants to Know Why We Should “Click here”

I was going to ignore all the commentary on the latest topic to rattle the windows in SEO/M country, but when Bill launched into the topic in the Usability forum, I couldn’t resist.

We visit the debate in Should Visitors Be Told To “click Here” Or, is Google Making us Stupid?

My take?

“Call to action prompts utilize “click here”, “buy now”, “more”, “learn more”, “submit”, etc. and honestly, PEOPLE are used to these signals. They know they’ll go somewhere if they click.

Cre8asiteforums announces that Ammon Johns is stepping out of his role as Forums Administrator. He was one of the original team that helped Kim Krause Berg turn a Yahoo! club on Web Site Promotion into what became one of the most popular forums in the search engine marketing industry.

His departure was done quietly and privately last week, where he was able to say his farewells to the forums moderating team.

Ammon later addressed the Community himself, in Hanging Up The Admin Hat, Stepping down from Admin role. Five years of volunteering with Cre8asiteforums, as an Administrator and Moderator, and over 9000 posts to his credit, the marketing industry dynamo and respected teacher, known to many as “Black Knight”, is moving on to new endeavors.

Usability and SEO - Red Light, Green Light

Another article has appeared on the topic of SEO and Usability and how these two different skill sets benefit each other. The latest, Usability and SEO. Which comes First?, written for Search Engine Watch by Eric Enge, caught my eye because he wrote:

“What I want to emphasize here is one key point: Usability comes first, and SEO comes second.”

It’s funny to hear that statement coming from a professional SEO.

The Semantic Web and Search Engines

A thread on Semantic HTML has inspired a number of interesting questions, and spawned some interesting directions.

The thread was kicked off by Yannis, who asks

The word semantic has many different meanings for different people. Have you got your own definition and meaning? Have you got your own rules about semantics that you follow?

A great question, it’s followed by some excellent posts, which ask a number of other questions.

What is semantically rich HTML? How well does it work with SEO, with standards?

Should a logo be placed within a <h1> element on each page of your site?
